InspectorCrib is a free civic data tool that aggregates public building records from New York City agencies — including the Department of Buildings (DOB), Housing Preservation & Development (HPD), and the Environmental Control Board (ECB). We pull data from NYC Open Data and other public sources to help tenants, apartment hunters, and housing professionals understand building conditions.
By using InspectorCrib, you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the service.
The building data displayed on InspectorCrib comes from publicly available datasets published by NYC agencies through the NYC Open Data portal (Socrata API). This includes violations, complaints, permits, certificates of occupancy, ownership records, and more.
We attribute all data to its original source. InspectorCrib is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to any New York City agency.
This is important: InspectorCrib computes percentile comparisons, owner-portfolio averages, and violation categories based on our own analysis of public data. These are InspectorCrib's computations — they are not official government ratings, endorsements, or assessments.
When we compare a building or owner with others, that comparison reflects our methodology applied to the records available. InspectorCrib does not assign letter grades, ratings, or safety scores to buildings or owners, and the City of New York does not assign any through InspectorCrib.
InspectorCrib uses artificial intelligence (powered by Anthropic) to generate building summaries. AI-generated content may contain errors, misinterpretations, or outdated information.
You should not rely solely on AI-generated content for any decision. Always verify important information against official city records.
InspectorCrib is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied. We do not guarantee that:
City data can contain errors, time lags (sometimes weeks or months), and gaps. Some records — especially for buildings constructed before 1938 — may not be digitized at all.
Nothing on InspectorCrib constitutes legal advice, safety advice, engineering advice, or any other professional recommendation. The information provided is for general informational purposes only.
If you're dealing with a housing issue, building safety concern, or legal matter, consult a qualified attorney, licensed engineer, or the appropriate city agency directly.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, InspectorCrib and its operators shall not be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of the service — including but not limited to damages resulting from reliance on data, AI-generated content, or computed metrics displayed on the platform.

We may update these terms from time to time. When we do, we'll update the date at the top of this page. Continued use of InspectorCrib after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of New York, without regard to conflict of law principles. Any disputes shall be resolved in the courts of New York County.
You can cancel at any time. Your access continues to the end of the period you have already paid for.
Buildings you add with a one-time purchase are not refundable, and they lapse when your subscription ends.
